Characterization and classification of greenbelt soils in Yambio and Nzara counties, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan

The objectives of this study were to characterize, classify and evaluate the potential constraints  of  soils Sakure Nginda Payams in Nzara Yambio counties Greenbelt zone Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. Ten soil pits dug, described sampled based on FAO profile description guideline samples analysed using standard routine lab analyses for physical chemical properties. Data generated statistically coefficient variation (CV) correlation. Results showed that top subsoil dominated by sandy clay loams. reactions strongly slightly acidic (pH = 5.4 - 6.7). most limiting nutrients P N. SOC was highest consistently decreased with depth, CEC low  (4 14.4 Cmol kg-1). classified into six major types: Ferralsol, retisols, acrisols, umbrisols, fluvisols, chernozems. have poor inherent fertility. It is recommended further survey be carried out and  conduct more research determine type fertility management feasible. Key words: Acid soils, Payam, management, shifting cultivation.
